Clear the calendar; it’s time for an outback adventure. Think Miller’s Mad Max – a land of dusty red desert landscapes, historic towns and long stretches of road with the occasional roadhouse. Our pick: the Pink Roadhouse in Oodnadatta, known by locals as the gateway to the outback. But first, we battle it out for the front seat in our All-New Mazda2 and enjoy the smooth drive north from Adelaide with the Flinders Ranges in sight. Alligator Gorge in Mount Remarkable National Park is a must for the wildflowers and native orchids in spring. Other highlights include Wilpena Pound for its natural amphitheatre and rich native wildlife, Rawnsley Bluff, Razorback Lookout in Bunyeroo Gorge and the Aboriginal art sites at Arkaroo Rock and Sacred Canyon. From here we head further north along the Stuart Highway to see the vast inland salt lakes, before continuing on to Coober Pedy, the opal capital of the world and home to a number of underground churches and hotels. When we reach The Breakaways, a unique rocky landscape of flat-topped mesas, we roll out our swags and settle in for the night, Neil Young’s Harvest Moon on our mind.
But there’s a full moon risin’ / Let’s go dancin’ in the light / We know where the music’s playin’ / Let’s go out and feel the night.
Brought to you by All-New Mazda2.
