Great Ocean Road
With a full tank of gas, and change still in our pockets, we make like Kerouac and head for the coast in our All-New Mazda2. In search of the perfect wave, we stop first at Torquay, a town that lives and breathes surf culture. We wind the windows all the way down and as Bells comes in to view we take a big swig of that coastal air, tasting the salt on our lips. Sans shoes, we hit the sand running, our boards tucked up under our arms, sticky with wax. It doesn’t take long to understand why the world’s best – Carroll, Slater, Fanning and Gilmore among them – make the trip year after year to surf these very waves. Back on the road we link to the web through MZD Connect in search of our favourite new track. As the smooth voice of Father John Misty surrounds us like a warm towel after a cool summer dip, we continue southwest to Jan Juc where we stop once more before heading to Lorne to rest for the night.
Here, we take a seat at local favourite, Mexican Republic, where, making the most of our surplus gas money, we tuck greedily into chilli prawn tacos like hungry wolves after a long hunt. And as the sun makes way for the clear night sky we ponder the next leg of our journey. There’s Cape Otway Lightstation set high on sea cliffs; the magnificence of the Twelve Apostles – an almost otherworldly collection of limestone structures off the shore of the Port Campbell National Park; and, finally, the spectacular drive around Shipwreck Coast to Warrnambool. It doesn’t get much better than this.
