The air smells of cinnamon in Sri Lanka, it's a wonderful thing. Its turbulent history (the 30-year civil war that only ended five years ago) has made it such a diverse place - with more languages, ethnicities and religions than you can imagine. The first Buddhist text was written there and can be seen (read: you can look at the big tomb it's housed in) in Kandy, while hands down the best food is found around the corner at a place called the Kandy Muslim Hotel. It's strange, but so fascinating.
We went to… The centre, west and south coasts of Sri Lanka.
On arrival I... Went shopping for silks and mosquito repellent.
From my room I could… Always see the ocean.
It’s the kind of place where… You are constantly overwhelmed by the natural beauty - from empty beaches to tea plantations to the rolling mountains.
Best way to spend the day… Is by rising with the sun, visiting the most colourful temples imaginable, drinking fresh ginger beer, getting around on a tuk tuk, and lazing on the beach.
I’ll never forget the... Pineapples - the juiciest I've ever had.
Don’t forget to pack... Rolls and rolls of film.
You should try... A shirodhara treatment. It's an Ayurveda practice where they pour oil over the forehead. Compete bliss.
The music sounds better with… A trumpet. The youth are really into jazz, it's great.
The drink of choice is... A hot cup of tea in Nuwara Eliya - tea plantation central.
The dish de jour... Was the freshly cooked seafood at Sha Sha in Marakolliya beach. It's a restaurant (i.e. bamboo roof shack with five tables) that you need to climb a ladder to get into that sits right on the sand.
The locals love to wear… It's logo mania in Sri Lanka. I'm not even joking.
