In search of magic, we head to the northern New South Wales hinterland, a mystical loop of lush green rainforest that begs to be explored. Day trips are the way to go, with Mallanganee the first port of call. Here, we weave through ancient rainforest toward the Richmond Range, our mode of transport, the All-New Mazda2, so perfectly in tune with the surrounding landscape with its dynamic KODO Design. The day is clear and we are lucky, as from the lookout we can see the distant volcanic plug of Mt Warning. To rest, we stay in Mullumbimby, a town set beside the Brunswick River, and to eat, we head straight for Milk and Honey, their artisan wood-fired pizza the order of the day. We wake and it’s hot, so to Minyon Falls we go, beginning at Cape Byron Lighthouse and on through the towns of Bangalow and Federal. Other highlights include Bar Mountain on the Tweed Range Scenic Drive for its rare Antarctic beech forest; the Tweed River Art Gallery for the resplendent panoramic views as much as the art; and possibly the most unforgettable moment of all: watching the sunrise from the top of Mt Warning. Trust us, the view is worth the climb.
